I was from Andhra Pradesh, born in Tamilnadu. I did not belong here. I was one of the boys in Cluny school which despatched me to St. Pauls school, a boys school. I did not belong there. I was scoring average marks among toppers. I did not belong there. I was “well-behaved” among poor performers. I did not belong there. I did not like Maths and had joined an Engineering college. I did not belong there. I lost two years and joined Under Graduation with a batch two years my junior. I did not belong there. I did my Post Graduation in English at Loyola, while I wanted to Social Work course. I did not belong there. I was one of the very few Industrial Workers who joined NLC in my batch with a full time PG qualification. I did not belong there. Since I read English newspapers and wrote in English, my peers thought I was “arrogant”. I did not belong there. My superiors thought I carried a lot of “headweight” for the same reason. I did not belong there. I worked as a Lecturer and all my colleagues were full time lecturers while I was someone on deputation. I did not belong there. I was chosen by my boss to put up the agenda on review meetings and attend the meetings of Division Heads, who hated me there. I did not belong there. I was transferred to the CMD Secretariat and most of the people hated me for that. I did not belong there. All my Telugu Speaking friends in Neyveli were executives and me a non-executive. I did not belong there. Because of my mis-match everywhere, I did not have a single friend. I obviously did not belong there. Where do I belong? Nowhere. A case of splendid isolation.
