Count the Memories, not the Calories

Lockdown started in the month of March and from then onwards, due to the associated scare, i did not touch any outside food. Absolutely nothing. First, there were no hotels/restaurants/eateries anywhere and as a result, there was no temptation.
Second, even when some hotels and restaurants started the takeaway service, during the third phase of the lockdown i think, getting outside food seemed risky.
Though the craving for food items of the hotels/bakeries was there, i dared not take the risk. Hmm, the frustration was there inside.
Today however, a pleasant surprise awaited me. There was a retirement function of a colleague at office. During the function, photographs were taken and a few were posted in our whatsapp group. When i saw myself in the photographs, i was astonished to see that i had gone down and looked slimmer than before! Wow. I felt great.
I came home elated.
My colleague who had retired from service had presented all of us a sweet packet. I saw that there was a plain cake. As my son likes them i gave him the cake. But he said he did not feel like having it. I looked at the cake for some time, then devoured it.
It somehow stimulated my hunger more. I checked out what else was there in that sweet box. There was a delicious looking golden jangry. How many months it was since i had a jangry, i thought ruefully, as i first nibbled at it and then hurriedly finished it. My appetite was fuelled by desire now. I saw a laddu. I tore open the cover and hastened to consume it with ease. Wow. What else was there? A Vegetable Puff. Hmm. Are savories, eaten after sweets, not meant to be taken as a counter-balance design to ensure energy density and palatability? Yes. So, without hesitation, i took the vegetable puff, bit off a sizeable portion and chewed on it with great enthusiasm. Wah. Heavenly.
As i rested outside on the chair, contendedly putting some mixture (which was in the box too) into my mouth and fully satiated, i remembered it was Saturday evening and that for years, Saturday nights were Puri nights for us, delicious oily puris with potato vegetable side dish.
65 days of home made food, slimming and trimming, all gone for a toss.
Count the memories, not the calories, it is said, i consoled myself.
Well, i love to eat but please remember….people who love to eat are always the best people.
And well, if i have to reimpose my self ban on outside food, let the Lockdown 5.0 begin.
